Folic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin (vitamin B9). Its lack causes disruption of cell DNA synthesis, which in turn participates in chromosome replication and division. Folic acid is metabolized in the body to tetrahydrofolic acid. It is a coenzyme necessary for the normal maturation of megaloblasts and the formation of normoblasts. Stimulates the process of erythropoiesis, participates in the synthesis of amino acids (methionine and glycine), nucleic acids, purines and pyrimidines, as well as in the metabolism of choline and histidine. During pregnancy, folic acid protects the fetus from the effects of teratogenic factors. Ensures normal maturation and functioning of the placenta.
