SN PLUS is a specification for motor oil introduced by the American Petroleum Institute (API) in 2018. It is an update to the SN specification and is designed to provide better protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) in turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engines.
LSPI is a phenomenon where uncontrolled combustion occurs in the combustion chamber of an engine at low speeds and high loads, which can lead to engine damage over time. SN PLUS oils contain additives that help prevent LSPI and provide improved protection against wear, deposits, and other forms of engine damage.
5W20 is a type of motor oil viscosity rating. The first number, 5, indicates the oil's cold-temperature viscosity, or how easily it flows at low temperatures. The "W" stands for winter, indicating that the oil has been tested and proven to meet performance requirements at lower temperatures. A lower number means that the oil will flow more easily in cold temperatures.
5W20 has a viscosity rating of 20, which means that it is relatively thin compared to higher viscosity oils. This thinness provides better fuel efficiency, as the engine has to work less to pump the oil throughout the engine. Additionally, thinner oils like 5W20 can flow more easily through the engine's small passages and provide better lubrication to critical engine components.
