The Zinky Boys is the third book in the Voices of Utopia series by 2015 Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich, a Belarusian writer banned by the Lukashenko regime. The narrators of the book - war veterans, mothers, widows, nurses... - tell us the truth about the war in Afghanistan (1979-1989), which the Soviet government hid from its own people for years.
Svetlana Aleksievich brings to the reader the bare emotions of those who left Afghanistan, and that is why the translation preserves both intonations and unordered, fragmented impressions and assessments of the war, which left a heavy mark on the lives of each character.
