Han Kang was born in South Korea in 1970 and made her literary debut in 1993 with her poetry. The novel The Vegetarian was published in Korea in 2007, and was later translated into English and won the Booker Prize in 2016, bringing the author international recognition.

The Vegetarian tells the story of a woman named Yonghae, who is living a normal life with her husband until one night she has a nightmare. To escape the terrifying visions, a woman suddenly decides to eliminate all meat products from her mind (and home). Yonghae's decision is seen as an incomprehensible rebellion by those around her, but the story goes beyond one woman's discomfort caused by the ban on meat - the novel, which many compare to Kafka's "Transfiguration", consists of three parts and follows the strange chain of events caused by Yonghae's decision from three different perspectives. With an honesty that reaches the point of embarrassment, the author exposes the brutal nature of man, the strange tandem of fragility and violence; he searches for the deeply hidden origins of confrontation with one's own body, eroticism, and denial of reality.
