annotation

"Let us try to learn generosity and altruism, for we are born selfish. "Let's find out where our selfish genes are headed, because that might give us a chance to thwart their intentions in a way no other species has ever done." "Individuals are not stable - they are short-lived. Chromosomes are often forgotten, like a hand of cards, shortly after being dealt. But nothing happens when the cards are shuffled. Cards are genes. Genes are not damaged in crossing over, they simply change partners and continue to exist. Of course, they continue to exist. This is their job. They are replicators and we are their survival machines. When we complete the mission, we are taken away from the beginning. And genes are inhabitants of geological time: they exist forever."

Richard Dawkins b. March 26, 1941
