She graduated from high school in 2002, then studied at Yale University, majoring in cognitive science. SHe graduated with a bachelor's degree from the university in 2006 and a doctorate in 2012. Barnes wrote her first novel at the age of nineteen and had sold five books by the time she graduated from university. After receiving her doctorate from Yale University, she conducted autism research at the University of Cambridge. She currently works as both a psychologist and an associate professor of professional writing at the University of Oklahoma. In 2019, she received the university's Robert Glenn Rapp Foundation Presidential Professorship.
