Annotation

Eric Lee's book "Georgian Mutiny on Texel: The Last Battle in Europe" is dedicated to the mutiny of the Georgian military in April-May 1945, at the end of the Second World War, on the Dutch island of Texel. Soviet propaganda used this event extensively, in 1968 a feature film was even made. At that time there was hardly a person who did not hear something about the rebellion. However, Soviet propagandists mixed lies and truth so much that it was almost impossible to get a complete picture. Today, after 75 years, this event has been almost forgotten. The book describes the Texel rebellion with factual accuracy. The story begins a little further - from the German-Georgian relations during the First World War. According to the author of the book, these relations are one of the foundations for the creation of the Georgian Legion during the Second World War and the joining of Soviet prisoners. It gradually becomes clear to the reader how the Georgians got to the Dutch island and what pushed them to revolt in 1945. In addition to the well-known works, the book uses unpublished memories and material stored in the archives of Great Britain and Canada, unknown to the Georgian public. It is especially noteworthy that the author refrains from "moral judgment" and entrusts the reader to draw conclusions. The book was published in 2020 in English (the original language), as well as in Dutch and Czech.
