The Why Not Gift Shop
The Why Not Gift Shop was founded in 2018 by two friends, artist and curator Gvantsa Jishkarian and curator Elene Kapanadze. The goal of the gallery was to support young Georgian artists and present them to a wider audience. The gallery welcomes all kinds of experiments and creative endeavors. The team works to present art that reflects the modern world - has a powerful message and touches on relevant discussions.
The first location of the gallery was a storefront in the center of Tbilisi, in an underground passage. The crowded underpass, full of clothes shops, cheap plastic items, religious accessories, vegetable and fruit stalls, was the most unexpected place to see modern art. However, it was very appropriate for a city where museums are like mausoleums and the general public has little interest in modern art. It was an attempt to liberate art from elitist connotations and invade the banal everyday life.
In the second year of the gallery's existence, it became a nomadic gallery and aimed to focus on strengthening mutual support and partnerships.
In 2019, the gallery started the project The Why Not Gallery gift shop, within the framework of which it partners with Georgian artists and in collaboration with them produces a limited number of items, mainly home decorative products. The aim of the project is to promote young artists, provide them with an additional source of income and enable the gallery to finance its own exhibition program.
About The Artist
Tekla Kighuradze (b. 2000, Tbilisi) is a young self-taught artist who already has a very distinctive drawing style. It is evident in his work that the artist is deeply interested in the history of Western art, Eastern cultures, local traditions and how these are depicted in patterns and ornaments. She puts these inspirations on her canvases and creates enchanting canvases, captivating stories of modern nymphs lost in tropical landscapes, executed with bold brushstrokes and a vibrant color palette.
