"Synagogues in Georgia" is one part of the project - "Historical-Cultural Heritage of Georgia", within the framework of which "Catholicity in Georgia" has already been published, and also the four-volume "Mosques in Georgia" is ready.
The goal of the project "Historical-Cultural Heritage of Georgia" is to describe the historical-cultural traces of people of different faiths and nationalities living in Georgia over the centuries.
Today, it is difficult to say exactly when the first Jewish settlers arrived in Georgia, however, the purpose of this publication was not such research activity, acquisition of new documents or discussion. We did not try to recount the history of Jews in Georgia in detail and chronologically. The purpose of this book is more modest and concrete - to find as much as possible the Jewish settlements in Georgia and the Jewish chapels and synagogues built there.
During the work on the book, expeditions were organized in 34 municipalities of Georgia and based on historical or archival materials, a total of 69 synagogues were found. Unfortunately, most of these synagogues no longer exist. Currently, 29 synagogue buildings have been preserved on the territory of Georgia, in some of them there are public institutions and residential houses, while 17 buildings have preserved their original function.
It is also important that the book is richly illustrated with historical and modern photographs, which allows us to clearly see the stages of development of both historical-traditional and modern religious architecture of Jews in Georgia", - Manana Kutateladze.
