Annotation

Lasha Tughushi holds a PhD in political science, was a Fulbright Scholar, and was also a visiting scholar at George Mason University in Washington. He was the editor-in-chief of the daily Georgian newspaper “Resonance” and the editor of the English-language news portal Democracy and Freedom Watch. He is currently the director of the “Liberal Academy Tbilisi” Foundation, co-chairs the “Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum”, and lectures at Tbilisi State University.

He is the author of a number of publications, including scientific studies and analytical works. “Stalin’s Gambit” is his debut in literature.

“This is a political novel. It unfolds a story that has either already happened or is about to happen. Then you think, if it has already happened, what else is going to happen? Then you realize that what is happening here has not actually happened yet, and you start to discuss what we should do to prevent it from happening.

This is a cinematic narrative. The shots change quickly. The action is dynamic. You remember the names, surnames, positions, and influences of the characters. Then you wonder if you really remember them; then you remember whether they are alive or dead; then you ask what the living want from the dead; then you discover that they did not even exist and we were creating them – with their own names, surnames, and positions.

This is a newspaper novel. Not because it is written in the language typical of newspaper chronicles, but because it unfolds with the usual dynamism of a newspaper; political events change at a kaleidoscopic speed; you realize that manipulation is a simple combination – the story does not even exist, we create it or it is created for us. "Finally, you ask yourself, is 'Stalin's Gambit' a political novel or an anti-novel?"

Zviad Koridze, journalist
