As a result of the reaction with heat, it spits out into small white balls. Often small white balls of perlite are mixed into the potting soil to promote soil aeration and water retention. It keeps water as well as air on the surface of the little balls and in the spaces between them.

Perlite is light, easy to work with, clean and odorless. It has a pH of 6.6 to 7.5.
