Annotation

"Mephistopheles, or the Story of a Career" is Klaus Mann's sixth novel and his most famous work. It was written in exile and published in 1936 in the Amsterdam publishing house Kerido, which actively published the writings of German-speaking immigrants. In Germany itself, the novel saw the light of day for the first time only in 1956, and that too only in the German Democratic Republic. This novel is one of the first critical works on Nazi German society. It tells the story of actor Hendrik Höfgen's spiritual degradation. The excessive respect of the recognized master of the stage, the desire to get even bigger name and money will make him decide to deal with the devil (i.e. the government). As a result of this deal, Höfgen becomes the artistic director of the Berlin State Theater and at one time becomes an influential figure in the cultural life of Nazi Germany. This circumstance is largely connected with his personal acquaintance with several high-ranking officials of the government, first of all with the Prime Minister himself, who is somehow proud of his "friendship" with well-known representatives of the circle of artists. Hiofgen realizes only later that by making a pact with Mephistopheles, he has become the "monkey of the rulers", the "fun trickster of murderers". The importance of this work does not end only with its high artistic value - it is also important from a historical point of view. Even the fact that the novel has been translated into several dozen languages (including almost all European languages) serves as a proof of what has been said. The first Georgian edition of "Mephistopheles" will undoubtedly be a great gift not only for readers interested in German literature and the history of the Third Reich, but also for all book lovers.
