Arthur Guinness began brewing ale in 1759 at St James's Gate Brewery in Dublin. On 31 December 1759 he signed a 9,000 year lease at £45 a year. Ten years later, on May 19, 1769, Guinness first exported beer to Great Britain. Arthur Guinness started selling porter, a dark beer, in 1778. For most of its history, Guinness produced only three variations of one type of beer. Beer "Guinness" is the most famous and consumed Irish beer, which has become a legend in Ireland and a symbol of St. Patrick's Day.
