American writer and journalist Ambrose Bierce (1842-1913 or 1914) became famous for his satirical and horror stories. His reports were always characterized by relentless intensity and impartiality. Unfortunate in his personal life, the writer (he suffered a severe separation from his wife, who died soon after) near the end of his life, went to Mexico, where the civil war was going on at the time, and died there under unknown circumstances. The author started working on "The Devil's Dictionary" in 1868, when he was leading a satirical column for the magazine "News Letter" published in San Francisco. The book was first published in 1906 under the title "The Cynic's Dictionary", and in 1911 it was published under the title known today. "The Devil's Dictionary" is a collection of very sharp satirical aphorisms and historical anecdotes, which cover various areas of public life, arranged alphabetically. The book contains many poems of supposedly famous poets, which actually belong to Ambrose Bierce himself. Although more than a hundred years have passed since the publication of the book, it is still remarkably relevant today. The author openly and mockingly exposes human weaknesses and vices and forces the reader to look at himself, without illusions, in an extremely honest way.
