Annotation
The novel is set in a fictional state that combines the features of the dictatorships of twentieth-century European countries, in particular, Hitler's Germany, as well as the Soviet regime. The state ideology – the so-called equilism – establishes the identity of people, eliminates the difference between one specific person and another, and perceives the people as a homogeneous mass. This is a state headed by the dictator Paduk. The main character of the novel, the famous philosopher Adam Krug, was a classmate of Paduk and used to mock him in childhood – calling him a toad. And now, when Paduk has become a dictator, he is looking for leverage to put the influential professor Krug at the service of the state ideology.
It is interesting that at the beginning of the novel, Krug says in a conversation with his dying wife that he is not interested in politics. However, this fact does not act as a brake on the repression used against him, neither for the dictator nor for the state ideology. First, Krug's close circle is arrested, and then he himself.
