Beefeater's history dates back to 1862 when James Barrow bought the Cale Street-based Chelsea distillery from Rectifier & Compounder John Taylor for £400 and by 1863 had begun producing his own distinctive style of gin. Initially, the distillery continued the production of liquors started by the previous owners, which further strengthened the reputation and expanded the customer base. Based on various experiments over time, he discovered that mixing a specific recipe of botanicals produced a drink he named Beefeater Gin, which the brand still produces today.
