Ekvtime Takaishvili traveled to historical South Georgia for the first time in 1902 after most of the region, like the rest of Georgia, became part of the Russian Empire as a result of the Russo-Ottoman wars.
During the expedition, the researcher visited and described the monuments of the historical provinces of Samtskhi, Javakheti, Sheti, Artaan, Erusheti and Tao, and published the results in Russian language in 1909 in the collection "Материалы по археолии Кавказа". This was the only one of Ekvtime Takaishvili's three expeditions to South Georgia (1902, 1907, 1917), the report of which was not given to the scientist in Georgian.
The book presents the Georgian translation of the materials of the 1902 expedition, which is accompanied by explanatory comments of a historical, geographical and source knowledge nature. The publication is also filled with photographs depicting the trip, which were not published together with the original, Russian-language version.
