In the Shadow of Singing Daughters is the second volume of Marcel Proust's (1871-1922) seven-book series In Search of Lost Time. The novel was first published in 1919 instead of 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War. In the same year, he was awarded the Goncourt prize.
In "Shadow of Singing Daughters" the experience of the narrator's adolescence is described. The novel consists of two parts: "Mrs. Swan's Environment" and "Country Side Names: Side." In the first part, the narrator tells us about his Parisian relationships, his acquaintance with Mr. de Norpois and Mr. Bergot, his relationship with his parents and his love for Gilbert. By reflecting on these relationships, on different forms of love, the narrator gets to know himself, observes his sensations and associations.
In the second part - "The Names of Country Sides: Side" - the narrator arrives with his grandmother in Balbec, a seaside resort where he spent a large part of his childhood. It is here that he meets Albertine, whom he falls in love with. In the same book, such important characters as Saint-Louis and Baron de Charlieu appear for the first time.
In this novel, the reader, together with the narrator, becomes an archaeologist of his own memories and feelings, tries to intuitively understand reality and uncover the boundary between the real and imagined, to answer the question - who do we fall in love with? The person in front of us or our own idea of him? In the search for answers, time loses its meaning and, in Proust's words, becomes elastic, changing its shape according to our feelings and the feelings it evokes in others.
