Three Friends

Erich Maria Remarque was born in 1898 in the German city of Osnabruck. In the First World War, he was sent to the Western Front as a soldier, where he received multiple wounds as a result of a grenade explosion. After the war, Remarque briefly worked as a primary school teacher, then turned to journalism and was the editor of several lesser-known newspapers. At this time, his first small prose works also appear. In 1929, "The Western Front Is Unchanged" was published, which brought Remarque world recognition. The Hollywood film made in 1930 also contributed to this. In 1933, on the second day of Hitler's appointment as Reich Chancellor, Remarque left his homeland and emigrated to Switzerland. Meanwhile, his books were banned in Germany and burned at the stake. In 1939, Remarque moved to the USA, where he enjoyed great recognition. He did not return to Germany even after the end of the war and in 1947 he received American citizenship. Until the end of his life, he lived alternately in the USA and Switzerland. Remarque started writing "Three Friends" in 1932 and finished it in 1936. The book is dedicated to his first wife Ilse Yuta Zambona. "Three Friends" was published together in 1937 in several non-German speaking countries (USA, England, Argentina, Scandinavian countries). A year later, a German edition was published in Amsterdam, and the book was printed in Germany itself only in 1951. In 1938, a Hollywood screenplay was filmed, the script of which was written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald.
