Władysław Szpilman wrote a book called The Pianist: The Amazing True Story of a Man Who Survived Warsaw. In the book, the pianist recalls his unexpected encounter with a German officer, who asked how he survived all this, to which he replied that he was a pianist. After that, the officer asked him to play the piano in one of the rooms of that building. Although at first the officer thought that the pianist was of non-Jewish origin, after learning the truth, he did not stop caring for him. After hiding it in a more secure place, the officer was periodically brought food and a German military coat, which protected him from freezing. Spielman did not know the name of the officer who saved him from death until 1950. The reader is presented with an unbelievable but true story told by the famous Polish pianist and composer Władysław Szpilman. The musician tells us about all the hard trials he faced during the Second World War, being trapped in the Warsaw ghetto. Unexpectedly, Spilman was helped to survive by a German officer - Hosenfeld. Excerpts from his diary are included and complete the musician's narrative. The book became the basis of the famous film, which was directed by Roman Polanski.
