Leo Tolstoy was born into a wealthy and noble family. His parents died early. He received a thorough home education in Yasnaya Polyana. In 1844-1847 he studied at Kazan University. In 1852, in Tbilisi, he wrote his first story, "Childhood" (published in "Sovremennik" in the same year), which later, together with "Childhood" (1852-1854) and "Youth" (1855-1857), formed an autobiographical trilogy.
