Givi Margvelashvili

Givi Margvelashvili (1927 - 2020) - writer, philosopher, linguist - was born in 1927 in Berlin, in a family of Georgian immigrants. His father, Tite Margvelashvili, was a historian and philosopher. He lectured at the University of Berlin and was at the head of the Georgian emigration. In 1946, father and son Margvelashvili were kidnapped by the Soviet special services. The father was shot in the autumn of the same year, and the son was transferred to Tbilisi after almost two years of imprisonment in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. For years, Givi Margvelashvili taught German and English at the Tbilisi Institute of Foreign Languages, and from 1971 until returning to Germany he worked at the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences.
