He was born in 1859, in the village of Hamsund, in the family of a poor peasant. As a writer, Hamsun's first novel, "Hunger", published in 1890, brought him recognition. In 1892, his second novel - "Mysteries" - was published, which critics consider to be the writer's best work. Published at the end of the 19th century, this psychological, modernist novel reflects the philosophical views that were widespread in the 20th century. This is a novel about the inner conflicts of a person and his place in the outside world, whose main character - an unconventional, double and lonely Nagel is obsessed with the constant, never-ending mystery of love.
