Julio Cortázar was born on August 26, 1914, in Brussels. His parents were citizens of Argentina and served in the diplomatic mission in Belgium during the First World War. After graduation, Cortázar worked as a school teacher for seven years. From 1944, he taught French literature at the University of Mendoza.
