Jurek Becker was born on September 30, 1937 in Łódź (Poland), died on March 14, 1997 in the city of Sissy, North Germany. He spent his childhood in the Jewish ghetto of Łódź, later, together with his parents, he was also a prisoner of the Ravensbrück and Sachsenhausen concentration camps. After the end of the war, he settled in East Berlin. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of Humboldt University and the Higher Film School of Babelsberg. He wrote scripts for movies. In the GDR, he was involved in the dissident movement. In 1977, he left the country and moved to West Berlin. The novel Jacob the Liar, published in 1969, brought universal recognition in the German-speaking world, which was the basis for two screen adaptations: one in the GDR, the other in Hollywood. The Georgian translation of the novel was published by Intellect in 2017.
