“The Sympathizer” is the debut novel by Vietnamese-American professor and writer Viet Thanh Nguyen, who won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize and several other literary awards. The author was 4 years old when he and his family were forced to leave Vietnam and his hometown of Bon Me Thuot in 1975 and ended up in a refugee camp in America.
The events described in the first pages of the book also begin in 1975. The North Vietnamese army has taken over the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon. Chaos, fear, and despair have gripped the city. Residents flocked to the U.S. Embassy in the hope of finding refuge. The narrator, in the first person, openly, without any introduction, invites us into his inner world full of contradictions: what it is like to be a spy, an implanted passive agent, a man of two faces, the owner of two minds; what it is like to be constantly torn between political views and personal feelings.
Nguyen's written language is as intense as the life of an implanted spy, it flows continuously; it forces you not to relax, to keep your eyes open, to maintain the ability to think critically, but, at the same time, not to lose the most important thing - a sense of compassion, because the narrator's contradictory life is a reflection of his own homeland and people, divided into two parts and opposed to each other, which, in turn, is a victim of the polarization imposed by the outside world.
