In 1890, two Italian botanists - Emil Levie (1838-1912) and Stefano Sommie (1848-1922) traveled to the Caucasus. The purpose of the trip was to study the flora of the Caucasus and conduct anthropological research. During the four-month expedition, Levie and Somie traveled through Adjara, Imereti, Svaneti, passed through the Kodori Gorge in the North Caucasus, from where they returned to Tiflis and then to Batumi via the Georgian military road. The letters written by Levie during the expedition were published in the Swiss literary collection during 1890-93. The Georgian readers soon became acquainted with these letters: in 1894, the "Moambe" magazine offered the reader a translation of one part of the text into Georgian. This translation is brought to life in the present book. It is preceded by a study prepared on the basis of archival material preserved in the Botanical Library of the University of Florence. The book is intended for a wide circle of specialists and readers interested in history, botany, geography.
