Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869 – November 3, 1954) was a French painter and sculptor, the leader of the Fauvism movement. It is famous for its technique of depicting emotion through color and form. He was born in Le Cateau, in the north of France. In 1892, he came to Paris, where he studied at Bouguereau's workshop, the Julien Academy and the School of Fine Arts (Ecole des Beaux-Arts). In 1895-1898 he worked in the workshop of Gustav Moreau. The search for direct expression of feelings through intense colors, simplified drawing and flat images was reflected in his works, which he exhibited at the exhibition of "wild people" (Fauvists) at the Autumn Salon. In addition, Matis was greatly influenced by viewing the Islamic art pieces exhibited in Munich. Two winters spent in Morocco (1912–1913) enrich his creations with oriental motifs, and a long life on the shore of azure added a bright palette to his canvases. His canvases of female figures, still lifes and landscapes may not be distinguished by thematic variety, but they are the result of a long study of natural forms and their bold simplification. He received a traditional vocational education. His pictures were often called "childish" because he depicted the forms in a plane instead of three-dimensional, and he put the main emphasis on the expression of bright colors.
